The name "Commerce" was given to the township in hopes of it becoming a trading center. Currently they are working on bringing it another mile north to Oakley Park Road.Ĭommerce Township Michigan is home to approximately 34,000 residents, according to the last census done in 2000. In addition, a few years ago the M-5 expressway was brought north to Pontiac Trail. This brought highway access within minutes of Commerce community residents. The expressway is known by some locals as the "Haggerty Connector," referring to the two-lane Haggerty Road which parallels M-5 a half mile to the east. Then in 1998 a new stretch of the M-5 expressway opened up to 14 Mile Road, on the border between Novi and Commerce Township. For many years, when one would mention Commerce to homebuyers, they would always reply back that it was too far from the expressways. In 1998, the M-5 expressway brought new life to the Commerce Township real estate market. Commerce Township borders on West Bloomfield, White Lake, Milford, Walled Lake, the Village of Wolverine Lake, Novi, Highland, Lyon Township, and Wixom. The Township of Commerce is 40 miles southeast of Detroit, just a 45-minute drive. Up until the last 35 years, Commerce Michigan was considered "Up North" to most residents because of all the lakes, rolling hills, and parks that surround the community. Homes for sale in the 48382 and 48390 zip codes fall in the Township of Commerce, Walled Lake, and Wolverine Lake.
